The first time I saw Maggie (not her real name) in my Chair Yoga class, I knew she must be in alot of pain. So, of course, I wanted to know more! She told me she worked as a secretary for her entire career and did very little exercise. When her doctor told her she had very little strength in her hip muscles to keep her structure in place, her joints started to cave in…as seen in this photo! (Look at her right shoulder, hip and knee!)

“If I only knew the importance of keeping my hip muscles strong, I could have avoided my needed joint replacements!” Maggie told me.As a Yoga Teacher to the 50+ community, that really hit me! We need to understand how important muscular strength is to our aging bodies, our comfort and our independence. So, here’s some hip anatomy and hip movements to get you started!
